Tangiwai railway accident
On December 24th the day before Christmas the worst railway accident recorded happened in New Zeland. The Train called the Wellington Ackuland express fell into the flooded river around 10:20pm. The river is called the Whangaehu. It is 10km from Waiouru. 253 people were killed in the railway accident. Most of them were coming from Christmas shopping and when cleaning up the mess lots of toys were found covered in the mud. A lot of families lost loved ones as New Zeland had less of a population then they do today.

James K Baxter
James K Baxter was born on 29 June 1926 and grew up to be a poet. He also looks after a drug addicts and alcoholics. He died from coronary thrombosis on 22 October 1972 he was 47.

Chief Justice declares treaty
The chief of justice Sir James Prendergast was delivring a case that would influence the Treaty of Waitangi. The Wi Parata case involved a block of land that Ngāti Toa had given to the Anglican church thinkig they would build aschool on it, but no school has been built. The crown then claimed the land.

Jean Plane flight
Jean Batten left from England to New Zeland Akuland at 4:00am. She arrived in Darwin 24 hours faster than anyone else has from the place she stared. Sh then went to Australia and then to Aukland arriving at 5:00pm.

NZ Event
On the 15th of October 1942, 17 coasts watchers nd 5 civilians were captured by the Japanese. They were captured on the Gilbert Islands now called Kiribati during the second world war. They were Imprisoned Tarawa and then later they were all Beheaded because an Amerian raid was coming.
